The "royal free city" of Rust, the city of storks and fine wines

Storks are especially close to the hearts of the people of Rust and regarded as town's heraldic bird. A special "Association for the Protection of the White Stork" was therefore founded around 1980. This association has since been successfully conserving and creating feeding areas and taking care of nests. It also runs a stork rescue centre, which provides medical care to injured or weak storks until they can be let into the wild again. The stork population in Rust has thus stabilised over the past few years thanks to this work. In the summer months approx. 15 pairs breed on top of the chimneys of the old houses in Rust where they rear approximately 32 young storks.
